When IKEA originally revealed the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker back in 2019, a level of excitement surrounding the Sonos co-designed speakers was noted. Both the lamp and the WiFi bookshelf speaker not only diversified the Sonos catalog delivering solid audio performance, but were also priced to allow new users into the ecosystem at an entry-level price. Two years later, IKEA and Sonos newest SYMFONISK table lamp speaker arrives as one might hope: with improved audio performance and higher degree of design allowing customization.
“Since launching the first SYMFONISK table lamp speaker, we learned a lot about how and where they are being used. For example, a lot of people use the lamp speaker on a nightstand, which led us to create a new, slightly smaller lamp base. We’re now also offering customers more design choices, making the lamp speaker a better fit for their individual homes,” says Stjepan Begic, product owner at IKEA of Sweden. “By integrating a speaker into a table lamp, we can save space, decrease clutter, and create atmosphere with both light and sound.”
Noting these observations, IKEA’s second iteration is subjectively more sophisticated of a design than the original 2019 design, with a less bulbous base. Its most distinguishing differentiation of the new SYMFONISK table lamp speaker and its predecessor is the new speaker lamp is now divided into a base and optional/separate speaker lamp shades. The base is available in either a black or white version, with two lamp shades in different styles and colors to customize: a textile or glass lampshade in either black or white (one could conceivably mix and match colors too). Additionally the new design accommodates for broader range of light bulbs with the inclusion of an E26/E27 socket.
In the audio department, the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker has been refreshed with an entirely new acoustic architecture, one tweaked with its own custom waveguide intended to deliver sound “from any angle”. The lamp speaker’s circular base isn’t all too different from the original, operating over WiFi either alone or as a part of an existing Sonos team of speakers, including those from the SYMFONISK range. Like other existing SYMFONISK speakers, the new lamp is compatible with Sonos’ current product range, with out-of-the-box compatibility with the Sonos app. We hope to get some ears-on/hands-on testing to see whether this new SYMFONISK lights up rooms both visually and aurally soon.
The new SYMFONISK table lamp speaker will be available in IKEA U.S. stores and on IKEA-USA.com starting tomorrow, October 12, 2021, joining the SYMFONISK picture frame with WiFi speaker, the SYMFONISK table lamp with WiFi speaker and the SYMFONISK bookshelf with WiFi speaker. The SYMFONISK Speaker lamp base with WiFi is priced at $140, with the Glass Shade available for $39 and Textile Shade for $29.
