The Auto insurance industry statistics continue to mount with driving while texting evidence and what happens seconds before many accidents happen. It's already known that most accidents happen because of driver error, for example one or more drivers committing a driver infraction, such as speeding, running a stop sign or illegal turn.
But more data confirms what happens at what more driver safety experts call that dangerous 3 seconds. The time when a driver distraction happens. For instance the time the driver takes their eyes off the road when dialing a cell phone, or God forbid driving while texting (I still don't' get that). What makes a sane person think they can type and read a message while flying down a public street. What text message sending or reading can be that important to risk the pain and suffering of a car accident?
Quick story, I have a special contempt for people who text message while driving because the last accident I was in a few weeks ago came at the hand of an admitted text messenger. Yes, she was texting, ran a red light and slammed into two cars, one of them mine. Fortunately everyone was fine physically, but this goes to show how insane this is.
What was more insane is there was no law against doing it in California at the time. But with the abundance of accidents lately because of driving while texting its expected to become law shortly. All I can say is "it's about time." Legislators in other States rush to make texting while driving a crime before auto accidents and injuries happen.
The auto insurance companies now check the cell phone records of drivers involved in accidents to find out if that contributed to the accident.
Before now who knows how many accidents, fender benders and fatalities have occurred because of drivers text messaging. After all if you were typing or reading a text message and ran into someone would you admit that's what you were doing? That's why I believe the statistics are much higher than they are now. Driving while texting is one of the fastest causes of accidents and other property damage of the last 2 years.
Here's another example, last year while traveling down my street 7 blocks from my home a lady pulled out from the curb and crashed into the side of my car while texting. Yikes, she not only didn't see me ... she didn't even look in her side mirror. Why? Because she reading a text message. At least she was honest enough to admit it.
Meanwhile the cost of car insurance continues to rise, and that's one reason. Drivers still find ways to let other activities other than driving distract them. So the next time you're tempted by driver distraction, remember the dangerous results it could cause, remembering that could help you avoid an accident. The car insurance I have is high enough, don't make it any worse.
Until a viable alternative such as voice activated device comes to market, it's still suggested that you pull over to the side of the road when reading or sending a text message.
